Which is harder, front or side splits?
Posted by EasyFlexibility Team on
When it comes to flexibility training, particularly within the realms of health and fitness, a common question that often arises is: Which is harder, front or side splits? The answer to this question isn't straightforward as it largely depends on the individual's body, their flexibility levels, and their training background.
However, by understanding the mechanics and the muscles involved in each type of split, we can shed some light on why one might be more challenging than the other for certain individuals.
Of course if you are looking for a short answer, then the answer to your question: Which is harder, front or side splits? According to the Side Splits Anatomy: Side splits are a lot easier to achieve than the front splits. The reason being the number of muscles and the type of muscles involved in a side split. For a more in depths answer lets take a look:
Anatomy of the Front Splits: Understanding Front Splits.
The EasyFlexibility system developed by Paul Zaichik the creator of the Zaichik Stretching Techqniues recognizes two types of Front Splits. The True Front Split (with hips squared) and the Open Front Split.
Today we'll focus on the True Front Split. If you're interested in learning the difference between the Open Front Split and the True Front Split please click here to read the article that explains the difference between these two splits.
The True Front Split Anatomy:
Front splits are achieved by extending one leg forward and the other backward, essentially stretching the hamstrings of the front leg and the hip flexors of the back leg. This type of split demands a significant amount of flexibility in these areas.
Individuals who have a background in activities that involve forward movements and stretches, such as running or certain types of dance, may find front splits relatively easier to achieve due to the natural flexibility and strength they've developed in these muscle groups.
However, due to the sheer number of muscles involved in a Front Split many still find that it takes longer to get a front split rather than a side split. Of course with the EasyFlexibility Splits programs getting splits is easy and fast, because we utilize the Zaichik Stretching Techniques which break down the splits into all the muscles involved which allows for faster, easier and most importantly safer way of getting your splits.
- 6 Hip Flexors, 4 adductors and that's just the back leg.
- Medial and Lateral Hamstrings (4 heads in total)
- Another head of adductor magnus
- Glutes
- Piriformis.
Side Splits Anatomy: Understanding Side Splits
Side splits, on the other hand, require spreading the legs to the side, stretching the inner thighs or adductors. This type of split demands flexibility in the groin area and the ability to externally rotate the hips.
Side Split (Sideways split, Middle Split, Straddle)
Actually, getting into a side split (also known as a sideways split, middle split, or straddle split) is a bit simpler in terms of the muscles you need to stretch compared to the front split (True or Squared Front Split). For a side split, your focus should be on:
- The 4 adductors
- 1 hip flexor
- The medial hamstrings
When it comes to stretching, in the EasyFlexibility system this boils down to just 5 exercises!
So which is harder, front or side splits?
So, which split is easier to achieve? The sideways split (also known as the side split, middle split, or straddle split), or the front split? Well, when it comes down to the specifics of stretching, you're looking at 5 distinct stretches for the side split compared to at least 12 for the front split. But let's not jump ahead. It's a comparison of 5 versus 12 if we're talking about a front split with one leg in front. If you're aiming for both legs in front, that number doubles to 24 for the front split.
Surprising, isn't it? But there's more to consider.
While the Zaichik Stretching technique can significantly enhance your flexibility, maintaining that flexibility is key, right?
To ensure this, additional supporting exercises are necessary. And considering that a "Front Split" essentially involves achieving the split with both the right leg and the left leg in front, it requires double the effort in terms of training time.
In summary, achieving a True Front Split demands considerably more time compared to a Side Split, due to the greater number of muscles involved.
But here's the exciting part! With the Zaichik Stretching Techniques, you can quickly and safely achieve both the sideways split and the front split!
