If you wish that you foot can reach just a few inches higher to step on that little protrusion, say no more. We all been there. A good flexibility allows the climber to freely lift the foot to the same side, opposite side and even forward. Unfortunately even professional climbers often lack in this department.
Majority of climbers do basic relaxed stretches. Those can work eventually, but take very long time to see results.
