Are your glutes the most neglected part of your flexibility chain?

To most athletes and fitness enthusiasts glute flexibility is not as glamorous as adductors or hamstring flexibility. Most often gluteal muscles are thought of as power muscles or even stabilizers.

But not the ones where flexibility training should have its main focus. However tight glutes can wrack havoc on other body parts above and below them.

Gluteal muscles extend, abduct and laterally and medially rotate the hip. If their tightness stands in the way of any of those actions dangerous compensations can occur.

For example, imagine you are doing a technique that requires a turn out. Restriction in the hip can cause a turn out at the knee, can cause a shift in the lordotic curve of the lower back.

While that is the most common occurrence this restriction in any other movement of the hip with tight glutes at fault will shift other parts of the body into potentially unprotected compensations.

Gluteal power and stabilization comes from a complex interplay of nine muscles:

If you include general, not ZST stretching techniques in your exercise regiment, you probably perform hip flexion with a bent knee sitting, standing, or laying down. And/or you perform a hip flexion with a laterally rotated femur.

These techniques get some of the gluteal muscles but not all. Equally important is that these techniques depending on how you do them, can be restricted by other muscles groups that are not glutes at all. Most notably the adductors.
